MLBPA Files Grievance Against Four Teams Over Lack Of Spending

Mar 1, 2018 9:39 AM

The Major League Baseball Players' Association is upset over the lack of spending this offseason and has taken the step of filing a grievance against the Oakland Athletics, Miami Marlins, Pittsburgh Pirates and Tampa Bay Rays alleging they failed to spend their revenue sharing money.

"Teams are required to spend their revenue-sharing money to improve the on-field product, according to terms of the collective bargaining agreement, though not necessarily on their major-league payroll," writes Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

Major League Baseball responded with a statement to the Times, saying: "We have received the grievance and believe it has no merit."

The MLBPA raised similar concerns back in 2010. That led to the Marlins signing Josh Johnson to a four-year extension worth $38 million.

Jose Bautista 'Keenly Interested' In Playing For Rays

Feb 26, 2018 8:22 AM

Jose Bautista remains unsigned, but has interest in signing with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times writes: "(It) wouldn't be a surprise if [the Rays] seek another right-handed hitter who can play outfield. If so, an interesting option could be Jose Bautista. Now 37, coming off a rough year in Toronto, the longtime Tampa resident is said to be in great shape, focused, able to play corner infield spots and keenly interested in playing for the Rays, presumably knowing it would be for a low salary."

Bautista hit .203/.308/.366 in 686 plates appearances for the Toronto Blue Jays last season.

Alex Cobb, Lance Lynn 'Aren't Really In Play' For Yankees

Feb 28, 2018 7:32 AM

The New York Yankees have been looking to add depth to their rotation all offseason, but they aren't expected to jump on any of the top remaining starters.

Aaron Boone said on Sunday that Alex Cobb and Lance Lynn "aren't really in play" for the Yankees at the moment. The club doesn't want to spend big or give up draft picks to sign a qualified free agent.

The Yankees are reportedly $15 million under the $197 million luxury tax threshold -- separate from the $10 million they planned to set aside for midseason additions.

Red Sox To Finally Introduce J.D. Martinez

Feb 26, 2018 7:56 AM

The Boston Red Sox will finally introduce J.D. Martinez as a member of the club on Monday.

It took a long time for the two sides to come to terms on a five-year, $110 million deal and another week for the Red Sox to review the results of Martinez's physical.

As the Red Sox reviewed the medical reports, the two sides re-entered talks to add language to the contract for reasons that aren't entirely clear.

Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox had concerns about Martinez's foot.
